Kalaa & Virginia Belly Dancers Present The Third Annual
Day of Dance For Autism
Hello and welcome!
My name is Kelly and I'd like to share with you the reason autism awareness is so dear to my heart!
Nine years ago, my husband and I were blessed with an amazing, little boy. He was a sweet, quiet little guy that made it very easy to learn how to be parents. As the years went on, we noticed that he preferred playing by himself when we were with friends and their children. We really didn't think much of it because his daddy is kind of a quiet guy, too. We spoke with our doctors about whether we should be concerned and they all said "No, it's just a phase".
When Ben started kindergarten, his teacher called the second week of school to ask if I could give her any insight on how to best deal with him. That was when things started moving very fast! We were officially diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder or PDD(NOS) in October of 2007. It was a hard time for our family. In one respect, it was great to know, but, in another it was the scariest thing we had ever faced. What is PDD(NOS), where do we go from here, what does this mean for Ben?
Over the last 4 1/2 years, we have come a long way. We are continuously amazed by our Benny! He is the most creative, artistic and imaginative little boy you could ever meet!
This is just the beginning of our story. There are millions of other families affected by autism throughout the world with their own stories.
The Day of Dance for Autism benefit has been a dream of mine for sometime now. I have wanted to use my talents in a productive way and have been inspired to do so again this year. It is my hope that together we can raise money and awareness for this rapidly growing disorder.
Thank you for taking the initiative to become involved. Let's help all families affected by ASDs (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and again welcome!
The Day of Dance for Autism Benefit will be in Virginia Beach, VA on April 23rd. Dancers of all types from the Tidewater and Hampton Roads area including Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Williamsburg and Newport News will be fundraising and showcasing their talents for this event. If you would like more information on how you can help participate or attend our benefit visit the Event Information page or Contact Kalaa. We are also accepting tax deductible donations. Thank you for helping us increase awareness and fundraising for the Autism Society of Tidewater Virginia.
